History Talk with John Conway

Neversink, Minisink, Mamakating, Shawangunk…most of us who have lived in Sullivan County for any length of time, or have visited here regularly, are aware of these rather strange sounding place names. They sound different because they are derived from the language of the Lenape, the indigenous people who inhabited this region for thousands of years before the Europeans arrived. Lenape place names are fairly common in the region, but so are names…such as Callicoon… that are purported to be of Lenape origin but are likely not. Find out the difference and learn more when Sullivan County Historian John Conway presents: ”Lënapei Lixsëwakàn: How We Use the Lenape Language Everyday” at Seminary Hill Orchard and Cidery at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 5, 2024
